Date: 2010-03-09

Take Greg's idea and tweak the member price policy. 5 years or more in the club 80/20%(club floats 80% of cost), then work down to say 60/40% for one year members, and make it go for a few years (or at least as long as Ironman is around).

That of course is for high commitment courses. CPR, First aid, etc should be open to members free of charge on first come first schooled basis .

	Date: 2010-03-09

Greg, Its not quite that simple. I wish it was. Some of the training options have considerable investment involved. One other thing that needs to be looked at is what constitutes an "active club member"? In my opinion if the higher priced training options are to be considered it would need to be a vote based decision between the members who are interested in the more advanced training options. ie "certified kayak instructor". I personally would not vote on any individual who has not proven themselves to be a valued club member who has been active for at least a few years. Guidelines would be a must.

	Date: 2010-03-09

I am in for any training. If I am ever in a bad situation, I hope my paddling partners have the training!!! In fact I hope that cost doesn't keep anyone away.

A bold idea......If you are an active, dues paying club member as of 3/15/2010, the club will pay 100% for your training. AND to encourage members to attend training, anyone that completes the training gets their 2011 dues paid for by the club. An offer that you cannot refuse!!!

This should facilitate that the VCC is a fully trained and competent whitewater club. Wouldn't it be cool to have the highest percentage of First Aid / SWR trained club members in the nation?

Do I hear a second???

	Date: 2010-03-09

I agree with Brian, I think everyone needs CRP and first aid training, and I want the people I boat with to have SWR training.
The classes I think that should be free or cost offset for Viking members:
#1 CPR/AED
#2 First AId
#3 Wilderness First Aid
#4 Swift Water Rescue

As far as Instructor Training, I'd want to see some sort of written committment that the people trained will stick around and share their training before the club invests $$, but I'm a cynical basterd.

FWIW - I don't regret for a minute "giving up" a boating weekend for a SWR course. It's still a great way to interact with water and you learn so much. I've used most of what I've learned there on the river at one time or another, with the exception of a Z-drag, and unless your trying to unpin a wrapped raft I just don't see needing it too often.

The details can be reviewed in this engaging post by Doug Davis:
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4809

Our VCC Club Handbook and Roster displayed in your vehicle windshield provides free parking at the Elkhorn Creek put-in. Our treasurer will be sending a check to Elkhorn Creek Campground for this club benefit (otherwise the campground charges approx $2 per boat to put-in on their property). The VCC Handbook and Roster is going to the printer this week so you should be receiving it in the mail in approx 2 weeks.

Treasurer reports the club has nearly $7000 in the bank. This is prior to paying for the 2 kayaks given away at the dinner meeting.

The possibility of club paid member training in Swift Water Rescue, 1st Responder, CPR, etc., was discussed and it was generally agree that training is a good thing and would be better attended if it can be held within 1-2 hours of Louisville, i.e. at the Elkhorn or Rockcastle. Topic to be investigated and discussed further.

Run Stateline Falls with Baxter.

The Ironman Aid Station (aid station along the run portion of the course, not boat safety along the swim portion) requires many volunteers and Louisville Montessori School expressed an interest in helping the VCC with the aid station in return for a portion of the proceeds.

Scott Martin, new VCC member and also new Parks Director for 21st Century Parks gave a very informative slide show presentation (including pics of Mrs. Martin running sic drops) showing preliminary design aspects of this "world-class" park system that will run along Floyds Fork from Shelbyville Rd to Bardstown Rd. Experiences included in the park design include paddling, hiking, running and mountain biking. 21-C is a Kentucky-based private, non-profit corporation, created to bring a fresh vision to the preservation and development of new public parklands. This park has potential to host music and meeting (i.e. film festival) venues as well as competitions, (i.e. a Bike, Paddle and Run triathlon).

Several new members joined at the meeting. Welcome to Dan, Travis, Anna Marie, Lauren and Nicholas!

ps: There was a text message motion for the club to commission 5 fiberglass race boats to be built by club members so we can reclaim the next "Not NPFF Downriver Race and Club Championship" but I didn't have the cell with me during the meeting so could not submit the motion. Since honor is at stake and Louisville is THE ONLY "happening" metro in the state, and with a soon to come world class intro-paddling and outdoor experience park system and training ground, I will personally submit a motion next meeting to form a "Not NPFF Downriver Race and Club Championship" committee to investigate, analyze and develop strategies to not only win the next Club Championship but to dominate this competition for years to come!!!

Right on Gunner............GREAT JOB............from Vikingrat

Not for training people to be instructors but simply for members to be up to par if either are needed due to the inherent dangers of our sport. This i feel needs to be a "CLUB PRIORITY". The ball on this has been dropped the last 4 years. The next thing on my list is to have 1-2 members to become certified kayak instructors to head up roll sessions and the such.
