Gotta say it was ironic that strategy with Richard actually gave me confidence.

There was massive rafts of debris from upstream, but these were shielded by the existing debris pile on the Indiana side. Of course there was a 25 foot wide portion of the wave from the beginning of the dam to the debris this was shielded by the debris pile from more coming at you, but had 2 bung hole pucker factor 5 strainers just downstream, and of course eddy service was blocked by a single tree. Had two short but sweet surfs there catching on the fly. I've now taken 4 shots at the wave from above and it is fun.
From shore we could not see access to the big wave on the WLKY pic , but there was ample access there, to big dividends between the debris pile and the dam gates!! I could see the flotilla of driftwood coming at me, it was mostly headed for the gates, and I had a clear flush to a nice eddy mid center, but alas, thoughts of kids and mortgage kept me from committing without friends to spot. Last time out, there was no shot at eddy service here, looks like some judicious pruning before the next 49.6 feet of lower pool is needed.
Richard had a very different feature way back when, the debris pile was non-existent and created much more turbulence downstream, but what a wave . With the right conditions you should be able to ferry from the spot where the dam meets the Indiana shore to gate #9 (closest to In).
Also rode back the eddy line to almost interpretive center and back up to dam, amazing calm, with fits of tree stumps surfacing and other strange sights on the eddy line.
